Laurie Adams is a California native who specializes in "pique assiette" mosaic art. The French term is loosely translated as "picker or scrounger of plates". In the 1930s it was bestowed upon an eccentric Frenchman, Raymond Isidore, who obsessively collected bits of broken china and covered EVERY inch of his home and garden in glorious patterns of colorful shards.

This unique art form requires the soul of a relentless collector and embodies the spirit of unbridled expression. There is the constant hunt for retro lamps, the odd flea market chair, the wobbly table or cast-off mirror. Then, the endless foraging for the art "medium"; vintage china plates, broken mirrors, river pebbles, antique beads ….a true magpie's hoard.

Finally, the bright bits are transformed as each piece is carefully hand-cut and arranged amidst the custom tinted grout in a joyful explosion of color and texture. It is an organic process, flowing between whimsy and artistic focus.

Laurie’s unique art is available for sale on this site and at juried shows.  She also specializes in creating commissioned works for the home and garden.  Examples of her commissioned pieces can be viewed on this site and she is always open to discussing new ideas or visions.
